This year marks Wrigley Field’s 100th anniversary season. It’s big news for a Cubs fan like me. And even bigger news for the team, as celebrating Wrigley Field will be more fun than actually watching the “baseball” that is played in the park in 2014.
On April 23, the Cubs celebrate the exact 100th birthday of the Friendly Confines, and will give away 30,000 of these Chicago Federals replica jerseys to fans. The Cubs will be wearing Federals throwback jerseys that day, too.
The Federals, part of the aptly named Federal League, were the first team to call Wrigley home; the Cubs didn’t play there until 1916. The jersey to be given away is a copy of what the Federals wore in 1914. The Feds changed their name to the Whales in 1915, and ceased operations following that season, along with the entire Federal League.
I am attending the April 23 game with my father and brother, making an historic day at Wrigley even better. This is a great promotion that celebrates one of the great landmarks of the game.
